A sash window is composed of two movable panels, or “sashes”, which form the frames for the glass panes. These panels move up and down in vertical grooves, one in front and one behind, counterbalanced by lead weights on cords or spring balances. The sliding sash can be opened from the top, bottom, or both directions. They have no outward swing in the traditional sense, although some modern variants tilt in and out for easy cleaning.
When we fit sash windows we use cotton cords with a nylon core to which we attach the lead weights. This makes the windows easier to operate. Today, the windows most often installed are double-glazed timber sash windows.
Traditional wooden sash windows have been popular all over London and often need to be replaced. Contact your local council before making any decisions about sash window replacements to ensure you are following all regulations.
